Developing Tools For the Biggest Shows on TV

Client: ITV

ITV was a fast-moving environment where the systems behind the scenes had to support huge volumes of content, people and production workflows without slowing anything down. My work spanned a mixture of internal platforms and operational tooling that supported teams across ITV, including payroll and HR systems connected to BritBox, alongside work supporting regional operations such as Channel Islands and Isle of Man News teams. A lot of the focus was on building reliable, practical solutions that could adapt around the way different departments and productions worked day to day.

As a Product Manager (Scripted) within ITV Studios, I primarily working on a platform called Nucleus. Nucleus was the scripting system behind productions including Coronation Street and Emmerdale, supporting the entire journey from first draft through to filming. The soaps had their own highly specific workflows built into the platform, with scripts moving through multiple draft and approval stages between writers and pre-production teams. Beyond the soaps, the platform was also used across a rotating range of ITV productions and live entertainment programming throughout the year, including Britain’s Got Talent, Dancing on Ice, The Martin Lewis Money Show, the Olivier Awards and Pride of Britain.

A large part of my work focused on improving the writing and production experience inside the platform itself. That included expanding workflow tooling and helping shape predictive scripting features that reduced repetitive input for writers and script teams. One example was dialogue prediction, where the system could intelligently anticipate which character was likely to speak next based on the structure and cadence of a scene. Nucleus also sat at the centre of a much wider production ecosystem, with downstream systems such as subtitling and accessibility workflows at ITV Sign relying on the accuracy and structure of the scripting data. It was a genuinely interesting mix of product thinking, workflow design and broadcast production at scale.
